A rainbow flag emoji might finally exist: Here’s what you need to know

On the heels of the new Disney-themed emojis comes news that our electronic devices might be receiving yet another much-needed emoji upgrade in the near future. As if having access to the drool-inducing churro and turkey leg emojis isn’t awesome enough , a new rainbow flag emoji could arrive soon, quite possibly before the end of 2016. But as Buzzfeed reports there are still a few details to be sorted out before everyone’s able to virtually fly their pride flag.

According to the site, Mark Davis, president and co-founder of Unicode, authored the proposal on the rainbow flag emoji that was submitted to the Unicode Consortium. As outlined in the proposal, the design of the new emoji should be fairly quick to execute by joining the code between a blank flag emoji and the rainbow emoji.

“Because existing Unicode characters are used, vendors can begin design and implementation work now and can deploy before the end of 2016, rather than waiting for Unicode v10.0 to come out in June of 2017,” the proposal reads.

Although it’s still in the works, we can’t help but get excited at the prospect of more inclusive emojis. The fact that emojis are being used to educate teens about sex proves that they serve a far greater purpose than allowing us to send quick, wordless messages. Aside from being an adorable, fun (and yes, addictive) form of self-expression, diverse emojis help to spread awareness and reinforce the fact that representation matters.

Hopefully, the tech gods will allow this to happen before 2016 comes to a close. We can’t be the only ones feeling like this year could seriously benefit from a healthy dose of bright colors and tolerance.
